Custom packing slips from QuickBooks Online

QuickBooks Online prints one packing slip, in one format, and gives you no way to change it. Missing Toolkit: Templates builds yours from a Word document you control — your layout, your columns, your branding — populated from the invoice you already raised.

Why QuickBooks Online can't do this

Custom Form Styles lets you restyle invoices, estimates, and sales receipts. The packing slip is not one of them. It's generated from the invoice in a layout Intuit fixed, and the only thing you can change is which of the two built-in versions you print.

That's a problem the moment your warehouse needs something specific: a SKU column, a bin location, a signature line, or simply the prices taken off so the person unpacking the box doesn't see what the customer paid. It bites hardest for businesses that moved from QuickBooks Desktop, where a configurable packing slip was standard.

What the finished slip looks like

This is the free starter template below, filled with invoice data. Every field is a placeholder you can move, rename, restyle, or delete in Word.

Note what isn't there: no unit price, no line total, no invoice total. That's the point of a packing slip, and it's exactly what QuickBooks Online won't let you remove.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Connect QuickBooks Online

Authorize the connection through Intuit with OAuth 2.0. Missing Toolkit: Templates reads your data and never writes to it.

  2. 2

    Upload your packing slip template

Start from the free template above or mark up your own Word document with ${PLACEHOLDER} tokens. Your fonts, logo, and layout are preserved exactly.

  3. 3

    Pick an invoice and generate

Browse your invoices, choose the template, and download the finished packing slip as Word or PDF.

Common questions

How do I create a packing slip in QuickBooks Online?
QuickBooks Online can print a basic packing slip from an invoice — open the invoice, choose Print or Preview, then Print packing slip. What it will not do is let you change the layout, add columns such as SKU or bin location, or remove pricing. To control any of that you need to generate the document from your own template, which is what Missing Toolkit: Templates does.
Can I remove prices from a QuickBooks packing slip?
Not in QuickBooks Online — the built-in packing slip includes amounts and there is no setting to hide them. With Missing Toolkit: Templates you simply leave the price placeholders out of your Word template. The free starter template above already omits them.
Do I need a separate packing slip record in QuickBooks?
No. A packing slip is a different view of an invoice you have already created, so you pick the invoice and generate the slip from it. Nothing new is written back to QuickBooks.
Can I add my own columns, like SKU or bin location?
Yes. Add a column to the table in your Word template and drop the placeholder into it. SKU is available as ${LINE_SKU}. Anything you keep in a QuickBooks custom field is available too.
Will it handle invoices with many line items?
Yes. You build one row in the template and it is repeated once per line item, however many there are.
What file format do I get?
Word (.docx) or PDF. Most warehouses print the PDF; the Word file is there when someone needs to annotate before printing.
