# Show a Customer PO Number on Invoices

> My customers need their PO number on every invoice. QuickBooks doesn't seem to have a PO number field. How do I add one?

Add a custom field for it in QuickBooks. Every custom field becomes a placeholder you can put in your template, with no setup in Missing Toolkit: Templates.

## Steps

1. In QuickBooks, add a custom field to your invoices and call it something like "Customer PO". If you already have one, skip this step.
2. Fill in the PO number on an invoice in QuickBooks.
3. In Missing Toolkit: Templates, open that invoice. The **Custom Fields** section shows the placeholder for your field, such as `${CUSTOM_CUSTOMER_PO}`, with a button to copy it.
4. Paste the placeholder into your invoice template in Word where the PO number should go.
5. On the Templates page, open the template, click **Edit**, then **Replace document**, and upload the updated file.

## Good to know

- If a new custom field isn't showing, click the refresh button on the **Custom Fields** section.
- Not every invoice has a PO number. To print something in place of a blank, add a default: `${CUSTOM_CUSTOMER_PO|default:N/A}`.
- The same steps work for any other detail you want on your documents, such as a job name or delivery instructions. Custom fields work on your invoices, estimates, purchase orders, and credit memos.
- If a customer uses the same PO for everything, add the custom field to the customer instead of the invoice. It works the same way.
